    IP: "Freely"

Saturday, November 22, 2008, 12:41 AM CST [General]

    by Ian Punnett

"The scent and smoke and sweat of a casino are nauseating at three in the morning."

That is the first line of Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel, “Casino Royale,” published back in 1953.

I was reminded of that the other night when I was watching the most recent and the best of the three versions of “Casino Royale” starring Daniel Craig as James Bond 6.0 who just nails it as far as I’m concerned.

On paper, the casting didn’t work for me because I couldn’t get Daniel Craig as the pyscho killer from “Road to Perdition” out of my head.

The second I saw the first trailer, I got it.

Same thing with Robert Downey, Jr as Tony Starke in “Iron Man.”  Had to shake my head when I first heard the announcement but from the second the movie trailer for “Iron Man” graced my laptop, I was hooked.

On the other hand, I’m not so sure about this new “Star Trek” trailer I keep seeing.  Ay, I love the franchise and want to see it continue forever but I’m not sure I’m ready for James T. Kirk, Spock and McCoy as teenagers.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Bs39zVqots

And I know that it’s a J.J. Abrams production and I’ve really enjoyed much of his work on Lost, Cloverfield and even MI3.

But from what I have seen so far, Star Trek XI really does look like “Star Trek 90120.”

I will reserve final judgement only because it has Simon Pegg in it as Scotty and I love him in “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz” to name a few.

William Shatner has commented on the new casting in “Star Trek XI” and if you haven’t seen that yet, here it is:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fu656gGkhI

Speaking of remakes, have you heard this story?

A kitten with two faces that meows out of both mouths at the same time was born Wednesday near Perth, Western Australia.

The kitten was delivered in a vet's operating room after its mother had complications with the birth.

The two-faced feline was one of three in a litter and appears to be doing well.

It hasn't got a name yet, but the owner is thinking of calling it Quasi Modo.

Now, that’s just wrong.  To name the cat “Quasimodo” after the unloved title character in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” just seems mean.

If we’re going to make movie references, how about calling the cat “Harvey” in honor of Harvey Dent, aka “Two-Face,” from the Batman comics.

Or, better yet, just call the critter “Kitty Kitty.”  That way when you call it you can just say, “Here, Kitty Kitty.”

    In other movie inspired Crypto-News:

The latest milestone in the quest for a Harry Potter-like invisibility cloak has been reached: a way of bending the geometry of space so that light from all directions travels around an object, rather than hitting it.

Unable to interact with light, the hidden object is therefore invisible, a new study found.

But how real is the possibility of an invisibility device? Is it years, decades, or millennia away? Even the author of the latest study doesn't want to hazard too strong a guess.

Also, in the ongoing fight against pirates,

Gone are the swashbuckling days of repelling pirates with cutlasses -- a British firm is spearheading use of a high-tech "sonic laser" to beat bandits on the high seas.

About the size of a domestic satellite dish, LRADs blast the target with a precise beam of sound -- warning messages, noises, sirens -- which can be turned up to excruciatingly painful levels should an attacker get too close.

"You'll be in absolute agony," company chief executive Nick Davis, a 38-year-old ex-army man.

"It's very effective up to 1,000 metres and excruciating if you get within 100 to 200 metres if it's at full power. It would give you more or less permanent hearing damage."  (Physorg.com)

I know this makes me some kind of geezer but this excruciating sonic blast reminds of the old cartoon character “Peter Potamus.”

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foPcgr4javU&feature=related

I wish I could find some footage of Peter’s legendary “Hippo Hurricane Holler” to show the youngsters.  Peter Potamus didn’t need some jive Long Range Audio Device to blast pirates out of the water!

As of last report, those Somali pirates still have their own oil tanker with a $100 million dollar cargo and are demanding $25 million ransom.

Maybe the Saudi owners of the tanker won’t mind so much if drives the price of oil up!

Right now in the Upper Midwest, gas prices are already some of the lowest in the country.

    http://www.twincitiesgasprices.com/

I have personally talked with people who have paid $1.49 a gallon but the price might not have lasted long.

If it’s true, it’s almost worth it to drive here and gas up!

    Cool Movie Short

Saturday, November 22, 2008, 06:40 AM GMT [Film]

Before you watch it (and I hope you do) one additional little fillip to add to your enjoyment:  the music right for the closing credits is Blondie's "Lookin for a Hero."

That was the theme song for a TV series about a group of gorgeous American secret agents (you could still have American good guys) who went around doing their secret agent things using the cover story that they were fashion models (this was before "Baywatch," when they dispensed with plot altogether).

They also had a HUNK.  One John Eric Hexum.  One look at this guy and you knew that if he ever had any kind of dealings with any of these women it would be to share grooming tips.  But I digress.  The show was a lot of fun, and I loved the pilot, but then one day ol' Johnnie-boy was clowning around and picked up a prop gun loaded with blanks, put it to his temple, and voila!  Brain stew.  That was the end of "Cover Up." Weird.

Still like the theme song.  Makes me want to go be heroic.

Here's the movie.  Worth the time.  Really.

There is no approval needed, all ya do is sign up & you're in.  Thanks!

Oh, and we've finally gotten a few females in there, but we can always use more! Join today! =]

Lakers Win, Nuggets a No Show

Friday, November 21, 2008, 10:35 PM PST [General]

Lakers made it look easy Friday night at Staples, beating the Nuggets 104-90. Kobe Bryant scored 11 of his 29 points in the third quarter before sitting out the fourth, Andrew Bynum had 13 points and 13 rebounds, and the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Denver Nuggets 104-90 on Friday night.

The defending Western Conference champion Lakers (10-1) are off to their best start through 11 games since the 2001-02 championship season, when they won 16 of their first 17. All of their victories have been decided by seven or more points - which was their winning margin against four teams.

Nene led the way for Denver with 18 points. Chauncey Billups made his first three shots, but was 3-for-9 the rest of the way and finished with 15 points and nine assists before going to the bench with 10:39 remaining.

Billups, a three-time All-Star, is averaging 18.3 points and 6.2 assists in nine games since the Nuggets reacquired him from Detroit in a trade that sent Allen Iverson to the Pistons.

Carmelo Anthony, the runner-up to Bryant for the league scoring title in 2006-07, had 10 points on 5-for-19 shooting and is averaging just 16.3 points over his last six games. The six-year veteran has scored 30 or more points 57 times since the start of the 06-07 season, the third-highest total during that stretch behind LeBron James (77) and Bryant (75).

The Lakers never trailed in the opener of a five-game homestand, making 14 of 21 shots in the first quarter and bolting to a 35-20 lead.

Anthony had a miserable first half, shooting 4-for-13 and committing three turnovers in a 2:47 span. The Lakers used a 20-6 run to increase a 13-point lead to 59-32 with 4:26 left in the second quarter.

Bynum helped ignite the rally with a pair of dunks 35 seconds apart, one of them off an alley-oop lob from Sasha Vujacic. Pau Gasol capped the run with a dunk after reserve Josh Powell blocked a shot by Kenyon Martin at the other end.

The Nuggets had one brief competitive stretch at the start of the third quarter, slicing a 20-point halftime deficit to 71-60 with a 13-4 run capped by Dahntay Jones' layup with 6:53 left in the period.

But the Lakers responded with a 14-2 surge capped by Bryant's 17-foot running jumper with 2:18 left in the quarter. Denver got no closer than 14 points on a 3-pointer by J.R. Smith with 4:40 to play.

Bryant, who won back-to-back scoring titles immediately preceding last season's MVP campaign, sat out the fourth quarter after playing 29 minutes. The only time he has reached the 30-point mark this season was Nov. 1 at Denver, when he had 33 to help beat the Nuggets 104-97 in their final game with Iverson.

The Nuggets have lost nine straight meetings with the Lakers, who swept them in the first round of the playoffs, and have lost 16 of 18 regular-season games at Staples Center since the building opened nine years ago.

Notes: Bryant shot a 30-foot airball with 1:41 left in the third quarter and the Lakers leading 85-63. ... Billups was MVP of the Finals in 2004 against the Lakers, averaging 21 points while Detroit won the series in five games. ... The Nuggets are 7-2 with Billups in the lineup, and the Pistons are the only team that has beaten the Lakers. ... No Denver player has scored 30 or more points through the team's first 13 games. It's the team's longest such streak at the start of a season since 2002-03, when they went 27 games before Juwan Howard had 30 against the Clippers in Los Angeles. ... This was the Nuggets' first game this season that was decided by more than 11 points. ... The Lakers came in third in the league with 104.9 points per game, and third in opponent scoring average at 91.4. ... The Nuggets remained tied with Utah for the Northwest Division lead after the Jazz lost at San Antonio. ... Three Lakers franchise records have come at Denver's expense. They had 51 assists against them on Feb. 23, 1982, 69 field goals made on April 9, 1982, and most free throws in a game without a miss - going 27-for-27 on Jan. 30, 1992.

Lakers take on the Sacramento Kings Sunday at Staples Center, Lakers Zone @ 5:30 and tip @ 6:30. AM 570 KLAC.

    Happy Thanksgiving

Saturday, November 22, 2008, 12:27 AM CST [General]

I thought that I'd better do this now since I've got a lot of things going on getting ready for Thanksgiving. I'd like to wish my Ren Family a very Safe and Happy Thanksgiving. I hope everyone gets to spend time with friends, family and especially Loved Ones that you haven't seen in a while.

Just try not to eat too much. I know that's hard to do with all the good food that'll be on the table. So, if you do eat waaaay toooo much, get to Faire for the weekend and walk, walk, drink, walk, drink, talk, have another drink or three and have fun.

Til we get to meet again, I hope your sails never go slack and smooth sailing.

Side note abot the casket match...

Saturday, November 22, 2008, 01:23 AM EST [General]

You know, I had a chance to watch Smackdown and have some more thoughts going into Survivor Series.

Oh, and by the way, I had a great opprotunity today as I met Kofi Kingston at my work today. He was a great guy and had a chance to take a photo with him. Overall great guy and Kofi, if you read this, thanks again!

Anyway, back to my thought. As mentioned in my previous blog, I was talking about how the casker match at SS will be hard to choose a winner. Big Show and Taker have had this going back and forth, and I guessed the possibility of intereference in this match, the only question is who?

Well, I came up with an idea of someone who we haven't seen on the Smackdown Roster who is a top heel and would be great to feud once Undertaker beats the Big Show. This wrestler has been injured since the summer, but has been recently cleared to compete, and that is:

    UMAGA!!!!

My new prediction is that Umaga will make his presence known in this match as I can see that this Show/Taker feud is ending very very soon.

Anyway, don't forget folks that Survivor Series is only two days away!

I'll get back to you once I remember the PPV! I'll see you all there!

    My infamous smackdown recap 11/22/08

Saturday, November 22, 2008, 01:19 AM EST [my infamous smackdown recap]

Smackdown came off a great show last week but how did they do this week?  Well i will tell you.

I was very excited for Smackdown this week.  it came off an amazing show last week and we have a huge main event.  After watching Smackdown i am pretty disappointed with the result.  Now pretty much none of the matches were great.  I mean they were good but not the great.  I really aren't going to mention any of them or described who won as i don't even think it is relavent.

The one match i would like to talk about is the tag team match of The Brian Kendrick and his bodyguard vs. Carlito and Primo.  Kendrick danced to the ring again and after which is always a favorite of mine.  He won the match but his bodyguard got the pin.  Kendrick is really making a name for himself here on Smackdown.

The Jeff Hardy vs. HHH match was alright. i thought it was going to be better. after i watched it, i thought it was entertaining but should of been better. i dont know why they put this match right in the middle of the show though.

The ending of Smackdown was entertaining.  I was so happy to see Vickie on the show as she wasn't on the show before hand.  She came out in her famous wheel chair and after all said in done, she was put in a coffin.  She was screaming her head off and then ran off.

The show could have been better if the matches were more entertaining and interesting and for Vickie Guerrero to be on ths show more.  Another thing i would have liked to see was the "Khali Kiss cam".  i just find that so entertaining and very funny.  Overall, the show wasn't the best of the year but wasn't the worst.  it could have been better but i hope next week's would be like last weeks.  That's all for now but what did you think of Smackdown?

Come to my profile at: McMahon 101

Saturday, November 22, 2008, 01:09 AM EST [General]

I was telling some friends a few weeks ago that Triple-H needed to get his personality back. I'm mean his wrestling was still great but he was starting to bore me a bit. The past 2 weeks on SmackDown I have seen that fun loving personality return to him. So to whomever is responsible for that, I say THANK YOU.

    Wanted: Actual Gimmicks

Saturday, November 22, 2008, 12:55 AM EST [General]

Well, I've made this point across other social networking sites, but since WWE decided to create their own version of one, I'm going to take this opportunity to ask some questions. I will not ask these all at once. Instead, I'm going to ask a few at a time. This blog is to ask one simple question to WWE and is open to public response. Please, feedback is always welcome.

Where are the gimmicks!? I decided to get right to the point because this irritates me. It's hard for me to even watch wrestling anymore because of this reason, among others. It seems that WW
